Summer in the Bay Area sneaks up on you. One day it’s foggy and cool, and the next you’re stuck in traffic with the AC cranked up and your engine working overtime. If you haven’t already given your car a once-over before the warmer months kick in, now’s the perfect time to do it.
At Easy Automotive, we’ve been taking care of Japanese vehicles in San Rafael for over 50 years. Every June, we see the same issues pop up — and most of them are totally avoidable. So let’s walk through what you should check out before summer really gets going.
1. Your AC Isn’t Just a Luxury
Let’s be real — nobody wants to drive around Marin County in 90-degree heat with a broken AC. If your system isn’t blowing cold air like it used to, or if it’s making weird noises when you turn it on, don’t wait until you’re sweating through your seat to deal with it.
We handle AC and heat repair right here in San Rafael, and getting it checked now means you won’t be scrambling for a last-minute appointment in July.
2. Watch Out for Engine Overheating
Hot weather puts a lot of stress on your engine’s cooling system. Your coolant, radiator, and hoses all work harder when temps climb. If your temperature gauge has been creeping up, or if you’ve noticed any steam coming from under the hood, that’s your car telling you something’s off.
Getting your cooling system looked at before summer is one of the smartest things you can do for your vehicle. A small fix now can save you from a way bigger (and more expensive) problem down the road.
3. Don’t Sleep on Your Battery
Here’s something a lot of people don’t know — summer heat actually drains your battery faster than cold weather does. The heat speeds up the chemical reactions inside the battery, which wears it out quicker. If your battery is already a few years old, it might not make it through the summer.
We can test your battery right here at the shop. It only takes a few minutes, and it’s way better than finding out it’s dead when you’re trying to leave the farmer’s market on a Saturday morning.
4. Check Your Tires
Hot pavement is rough on tires, especially if they’re already low on tread or not properly inflated. Under-inflated tires can overheat and blow out — and nobody wants that on the 101. Take a quick look at your tires and make sure they’re inflated to the right pressure. Not sure what that is? It’s usually on the sticker inside your driver’s door.
And if those tires are looking a little bald, it’s time to have them checked out.
5. Top Off Your Fluids
This one’s easy to forget but super important. Brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid — all of these need to be at the right levels to keep your car running smoothly. Summer heat can cause fluids to break down faster, so a quick fluid check is a great way to start the season off right.
